However as part of my remit to write articles on caravan and trailer insurance, I have come across something quite remarkable called a’ Twagon’ or towable wagon. Chris Ward of Wild Wood Design, based in Broadwindsor on the Dorset – Devon border has designed a modern day version of an original ash wood, bow top, canvas covered Romany caravan.
Retaining the dimensions of an original, at 13.5’ long x 6.6’ wide x 6.4’ high (internal area), Chris has used his boat building skills to comfortably accommodate a kitchen area with oak worktops, double bed and plenty of seating as standard. Optional extras include a child’s bed and a wood burner, although Chris will work with clients to offer a completely bespoke space.
The difference between an original Romany wagon and the Twagon is the fact that it sits on a metal, VOSA inspected chassis, enabling it to be towed on the open road by a motor vehicle, and weighing in at a mere 900kg is relatively lightweight.
I spoke to Chris who told me that he takes roughly 6-7 weeks to complete a commission for a client, charging from £11,500 for the completed product and that the customer invariably asks about insurance.
